Average highs at the Laguna Beach NOAA station run from 67°F in December to 81°F in August and September, and a normal year brings 12.7 inches of rain. The Pacific keeps summer days cooler at the coast than in inland Orange County.

Spring (March to May)

Spring warms in steady steps. Average highs climb from 69°F in March to 73°F in April and 75°F in May, while lows rise from 48°F to 55°F. Rain tapers through the season: 1.6 inches in March, 0.8 in April and 0.2 in May. By May, low morning cloud often covers the coast, the pattern known as May Gray.

Summer (June to August)

Summer is the driest season, with 0.2 inches of rain across June, July and August combined. Average highs run from 76°F in June to 80°F in July and 81°F in August, and nights stay mild at 58°F to 61°F. June mornings often start under the marine layer, the low cloud called June Gloom, which tends to clear by midday. Hot days do come: from 1991 until its daily records end in 2008, the station logged 23 summer days at 90°F or higher, with a peak of 97°F on August 12, 1991.

Fall (September to November)

September’s average high, 81°F, matches August’s. October averages a high of 77°F and November 72°F, while lows drop from 59°F in September to 49°F in November. Santa Ana winds are most common from fall into winter, and they can bring the hottest, driest days of the year, including in October. Rain returns as the season goes on: 0.5 inches in October and 1.1 inches in November.

Winter (December to February)

Winter brings most of the rain. December through February accounts for 8.0 of the year’s 12.7 inches, and February is the wettest month at 3.4 inches. Days stay mild, with average highs of 67°F to 68°F, while the coldest nights come in December and January, when lows average 44°F. Gray whales migrate along the coast in winter and early spring, a common season for whale watching.

Ocean Temperature and the Marine Layer

The water off Laguna Beach is coolest from January through April, at about 58°F to 60°F, and warmest from July through September, at about 70°F to 71°F. August is the peak month in the Open-Meteo averages, at 71°F. Two Scripps Institution of Oceanography buoys, reported through NOAA’s National Data Buoy Center, bracket that figure: Oceanside Offshore averaged 71.4°F in August from 2020 to 2024, and San Pedro South averaged 68.9°F. In March and April the water stays as cold as winter water, about 58°F to 60°F, while the air warms to 69°F in March and 73°F in April.

The marine layer forms when moist air chills over the cool ocean and condenses into a deck of low cloud. It is most common on late-spring and early-summer mornings, which gives May Gray and June Gloom their names. It often clears by midday, though in May and June it can linger into the afternoon. For beach time in those months, the afternoon gives you the best odds of sun.

Santa Ana Winds

Santa Ana winds are dry offshore winds that blow from the inland deserts toward the coast. They are most common from fall into winter. When they blow, Laguna Beach can see the hottest, driest days of the year, including in October, a month that averages a high of 77°F.
