About The Strand at Headlands
The Strand at Headlands is a gated community of custom homes on the Dana Point Headlands, above Strands Beach. It sits on part of the 121-acre Dana Point Headlands, which Headlands Reserve LLC planned with the city; the Coastal Commission approved the plan in 2004 and the city approved its master permit in 2005. The plan allows up to 118 single-family lots.
The plan ties the homes to public land: about 68 acres of parks, trails and open space, including Strands Vista Park, South Strands Conservation Park and the Headlands Conservation Area. Its gates limit cars only. Walkers and cyclists keep the public accessways down to Strands Beach, under a 2016 settlement between the city and the Coastal Commission. The inclined elevator to the beach is out of service while the city designs a replacement; as of 2025 a golf-cart shuttle, paid for by the homeowners' association, ran in its place on weekends, holidays and summer days. Our Dana Point beaches guide covers Strands and the Headlands trails.
