About Capistrano Beach

Capistrano Beach, ZIP code 92624, is the southern end of Dana Point, from Doheny State Beach to the San Clemente line. The Coastal Commission's planning documents treat it as three parts: Doheny Village, the residential bluffs above Pacific Coast Highway, and Beach Road, a private road of homes on the sand that the Capistrano Bay Community Services District has run since 1959. The townsite was laid out in the 1920s; for a time the area carried the name Doheny Park, homeowners petitioned in 1947 to restore the old name, and it became Capistrano Beach again on January 1, 1948.

Capistrano Beach was unincorporated county land until Dana Point incorporated on January 1, 1989. Its public way to the sand is Capistrano Beach Park, the county beach at Beach Road and Palisades Drive. This shore erodes. The county has placed rock and sand-filled cubes along Capistrano Beach Park since 2018, and after storm surf damaged Beach Road homes in September 2026, owners placed emergency rock revetments behind them under Coastal Commission permits. See the Beach Road page and our Dana Point beaches guide.
